A self promotional item based on the film ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ 1986. During lockdown I had time to catch up on some of my childhood favourite films, one of them being ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. This gave me the idea make a grow your own Aubrey II plant, using a Dionaea Muscipula ‘Venus Fly Trap’ seeds, (in the 1960s movie Aubrey was a mix of a Butterwort and a Venus Flytrap).

Starting by drawing up an illustrative logo, this then lead to creating a bespoke Maxwell House Coffee tin packaging, referencing the tin Aubrey is planted in at the beginning of the film. From there it was coming up with fun ideas for what can be in the tin and how to package the seeds. Soil to grow the seeds, which also resembles Coffee, and a Blood test tube (fake blood) to start off feeding your Carnivorous plant.

From doing this project it gave me the opportunity to get back in touch with the more physical side of product design and play around with print. I was able to combine my illustrative skills, design and packaging knowledge to create my own physical self promotional item.

In The Tin

Instructions

  1. Remove sticker from base of tin to reveal hole.
  2. Evenly spread the seed on top of the soil and lightly cover. Be careful not to plant seeds too deep as this will effect their growth.
  3. Place the tin in a dish of rain water, So the the water gets to the soil through the hole at the bottom. (Venus fly trap is an acidic-loving plant, so water with rainwater, as this has a lower pH than tap water).
  4. Place the tin in a warm dry place with plenty of sunlight.
  5. Continue to keep the soil moist, watering the plant from the base as it grows.
  6. If the roots of the plant start to fill the tin, transfer it to a larger pot so they can
grow... but be careful they dont get to big or you’ll end up with a ‘Mean Green Mother’ on your hands.
